make sure the machine is dry and the same for the surroundings. hold only your power cable, do not touch the machine, then plug the cable into the wall socket. listen for the sound of the pump and *see* if it pumps water. unplug again. mount the cables to the original position again.
When the espresso has reached the bottom line marking on the glass carafe, you can stop the brewing and switch to frothing milk. When you finish frothing, turn the selector switch back to the coffee brewing position.
